Before School Care to be in place for 2010
The school requests that children do not arrive before 8:30am and should be collected by 3:00pm. Playground supervision is provided during the school breaks at morning tea and lunch but the supervision and safety of children is a major concern outside of the 8:30am to 3:00pm school day. Parents are asked not to allow students to be in the grounds, or be dropped at school, prior to 8:30am.
The Parents and Citizens’ Association currently runs a high quality and accredited Outside School Hours Care service for after school and holiday programs. I am very pleased to announce that this service will be extended to before school care in 2010. Students must be registered to take advantage of this service and parents are encouraged to express an interest in before school care as soon as possible to secure a place. Please contact the school office to express an interest. We will then arrange for the OSHC staff to contact you next term to ensure all paperwork is up to date when this service commences in January, next year.
Wavelengths
We are currently upgrading the school’s website and are including the main content of the fortnightly Wavelengths newsletter in the “latest news” section. We are aware that the paper versions “go missing,” but also that when students don’t live with both parents, regular communication to all is important. I would also like to extend an offer to email a “pdf” file of the newsletter to those who would like this method of communication. Please phone to register your interest.
Australian Business and Community Network
We currently have a group of Stockland employees volunteering their time to support the school’s reading programs. This has been organised by the Australian Business Community Network and will provide one-on-one support for ten students over the next few months. This is a great example of community involvement in the school and I would like to thank both ABCN and Stockland for their commitment to our students.

David

Music News – Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod
Mooloolaba State School has excelled once again at this year’s Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod. For an astonishing eighth year in a row, Mooloolaba’s all-conquering Recorder Ensemble took out first place. This was despite stiff opposition from six other ensembles which included the Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra Recorder Ensemble.
Not to be outdone, several members of the Recorder Ensemble then competed in the solo and duet sections with equally outstanding results. Sala Fletcher won first place in the 10 years and under section while Casey Baggieri and Joel Williamson tied for second place in the 13 years and under section. In the duet section, Casey Baggieri and Sala Fletcher achieved second place while Joel Williamson and Scott Sinclair tied for third place with Hannah Wallace and Molly McNulty. Congratulations kids on a remarkable result.
Musicfest
Recently our Senior Choir performed in the final of the Sunshine Plaza 2009 Musicfest competition. Despite several members of the choir being absent due to illness, the Senior Choir did an outstanding job, finishing 3rd in the choir section of the competition. This was an excellent result given that Musicfest involved some 34 schools overall. Our prize for third was a beautiful trophy and $150. Well done Senior Choir.

Kawana District Girl Guides
Kawana District Girl Guides are desperately looking for two new leaders for their Gumnut Guide Unit and one new leader for their Ranger Guide Unit. The Kawana “Fairy” Gumnut Guide Unit is a small group of girls aged 5-7 years. They currently meet on a Tuesday afternoon from 3.15 to 4.45pm but this time can be changed if necessary. They are looking for two fun, caring and friendly women to share lots of fun and to inspire them. The Kawana “Frangipani” Ranger Guide Unit is a small group of girls aged 13 to 18 years that currently meet on a Tuesday evening from 5.00 to 7.00pm. They are looking for a second adult to act as a mentor and help them to organise their own program, whilst ensuring their safety.
If you know of anybody willing to help these wonderful groups of girls, please ask them to call Glenys Kempe (Kawana District Leader) on 5493 3520 or 0407 146 917. No Guiding experience is necessary but it helps to have a love of life, a willingness to try new experiences and an enthusiasm to inspire others.
